September 1999: Make It and Take It

A NKE Sharing Workshop

Last year’s “Make and Take” workshop was so successful, that we’re doing another one this year! You will have the opportunity to make several teaching aids (all different from last year’s) and take them with you at the end of the workshop. You will also receive patterns and instructions for other “hands on” activities for your students. These teaching aids will be demonstrated by the teachers who use them in their classrooms.
In addition, from 9:00 am to 10:00 am we will host a choral reading session featuring music for use in Upper Elementary and easy Junior High. The music packet will be yours to take home after the session. Join us for a day filled with great ideas!

On Saturday, September 25, NKE held its second “Make it and Take It” workshop. Twenty-seven people attended the morning session.
In the first hour, Lynn Rupp, our president, led us through some new choral arrangements for children’s choir, including a fun arrangement of “This Old Man” and a beautiful piece by Bob Wilcott, “The Time of Snow.” Sample of 10 pieces were given to participants.
Then we proceeses to make five useful manipulatives. 1) A reversible beat/rhythm sign used for switching between beat and rhythm during a song. 2) Animal pictures to be used with the classic song “Bought Me a Cat.” 3) Pentatonic solfege ladders for students to practice pentatonic scales. 4) A Stop-Go sign, to be used for inner hearing activities (e.g. the students sing the song out loud while “Go” is showing, and sing it in their head during “Stop”). 5) A reversible pumpkin blank on one side and colored in on the other to be used to switch between beat and rhythm on the song “Pumpkin Pumpkin.” 6) Blank sets of song cards on which participants wrote four sets of a song to be used in class for students to arrange in the correct order.
The Esoterics, a local 20th-century music singing group, also treated us to a mini-concert. They performed the music of Bardos, a Hungarian composer and educator who is credited with helping to widely disseminate Kodaly’s education ideas. It was beautiful music, impeccably performed. The Esoterics also gave out free tickets for the full concert, which many of us attended. All in all, it was a fun and packed morning. Could this be turning into an annual event? Stay tuned! (From Northwest Passages, March 2000).
