October 2014: Fall Sharing

Come join your fellow elementary music teachers for our annual Fall Sharing Event!!  Northwest Kodaly members from all over Puget Sound will be presenting their ideas and tricks for a successful music program!  Come sharpen up your teaching skills and collaborate with fellow music teachers, its always a popular event.  Topics include: “Joy of Part Singing,” “Music Classroom and Common Core,”  “Integrating Popular Music in Choir Class,” and so much more!  The workshop will also feature a “Make-and-Take” where we will make a class set of beat-keeping icons–A useful tool for many!

Teachers as Ethnographers: Applying your experiences in the classroom

Need more multi-cultural music? Look no further! Dr. Ramona Holmes, Professor of Music and Director of Music Education at Seattle Pacific University, will be presenting to head up our November Workshop. Come learn practical ways you can incorporate authentic multi-cultural music in the classroom.

unnamed(2)Dr. Holmes’ work combines her research in music education and ethnomusicology. She has prepared music education curriculum and materials from many field work experiences in Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. She has focused in depth on the variety of string music found around the world and techniques to perform these repertoires authentically in school music contexts. At Seattle Pacific, she also directs Gamelan.

ACDA/NKE Joint Choral Workshop with Patricia Bourne & Nadia Tarnawski

patricia-bourneCome sing through and take home some of the finest a cappella music for ensembles of all ages with Dr. Patricia Bourne! Dr. Bourne currently serves on the Music Education faculty at Western Washington University, and is the author of Inside the Classroom: Teaching the Art with Heart and Inside the Elementary Chorus: Instructional Techniques for the Non-Select Children’s Choir. Come ready to sing!

TarnawskyNadia-200x200Nadia Tarnawski is presenting a cappella folk choral music from Ukraine on Friday night January 16. This gifted choral clinician will give hardcopy authentic, Ukranian treble choir arrangements ranging from unison to 4 part harmony (Elementary through HS choral directors should attend!) April 2015: Our Youngest Singers with Dr. Leigh Ann Garner

Leigh Ann GarnerDr. Leigh Ann Garner teaches elementary classroom and choral music at Christa McAuliffe Elementary School in Hastings, MN. In addition, she is the Director of the Kodály Institute at the University of St. Thomas, where she teaches pedagogy courses Levels I and II, and Folksong Analysis and Materials. Garner also taught on the Kodály faculty at Wichita State University. She teaches interactive workshops throughout the United States specializing in early childhood music, Kodály-inspired pedagogy, curriculum development, and standards-based assessments.
Garner is the co-author of Music and Movement: a music curriculum for children ages one-five, and is a contributing author for MacMillan McGraw/Hill music textbook series. She served on the board of the Organization of American Kodály Educators from 2004-2012. She holds an EdD from the University of St. Thomas, an MA in Music Education from the University of St. Thomas, and a BA in Vocal Music Education from St. Olaf College.
Come prepared to sing, dance and leave with lesson ideas for your littles!

We will be voting at our year end meeting and your votes will be important. This will also be our final call for Board Nominations. Join us!

Please bring a brunch item to share. This could be as complicated as a homemade breakfast casserole or as simple as croissants or fruit from the store. The board will provide plates, cutlery, and coffee.
